Rebecca Downes

Rebecca (@beccadownes) has been working in the technology and film industry since the 90s.  She's spent the the last three years studying organisations and remote work for her PhD at Victoria University.

During this talk we discuss:

  • How she defined remote work for her research
  • The history of remote work (it goes back way farther than I'd considered)
  • Why remote work is harder and different
  • The importance of culture and the relationship between work and our social nature
  • Why 1:1's are even more important
  • Some important considerations for a manager of a remote team
  • Two styles of remote workers: integrators and separators
